I had to go to another virtual console and kill X. see here moved xorg.conf.new to xorg.conf ( as root ofc )installed xfce4 xfce4-goodiesput startxfce4 in .xinitrc and was able to startx ... The way I solved it, I edited the xorg.conf file and deleted everything apart the "Device" Section. When the message about viewing the X server output came, I pressed Ctrl F2 2.
